Lifted by the Right Circle: Lessons from the Maxwell Leadership Conference

This week, I had the honor of attending the Maxwell Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas. I did not just gain information. I experienced a transformation. When you step into a room filled with leaders who share your values, your vision sharpens, your faith strengthens, and your purpose becomes clearer.
There is something powerful about proximity. The people you surround yourself with will either stretch your faith or shrink your thinking. They will either challenge you to grow or make you comfortable where you are. Scripture speaks directly to this truth: “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” (Proverbs 13:20, KJV)
At this conference, I saw what happens when leaders gather with intention. Conversations were not shallow. They carried weight. They carried purpose. Every session, every interaction pushed me to think more deeply about leadership, service, and impact.
The Power of Shared Values
When you get around people who value integrity, growth, faith, and service, something shifts within you. You begin to see what is possible at a higher level. You are reminded that leadership is not about position. It is about influence, responsibility, and stewardship. The Bible tells us that “As iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” (Proverbs 27:17, KJV)

Sharpening requires contact. It requires friction. It requires accountability. That is what I experienced throughout this week. I was challenged. I was encouraged. I was refined.
Here is a truth that stood out to me: You do not rise to your calling in isolation. You rise through connection, correction, and commitment.
The Environment You Choose Shapes You
Many people desire growth, yet they remain in environments that resist it. Growth demands alignment. If your environment does not match your values, your progress will always face resistance. At the Maxwell Leadership Conference, I saw leaders who were intentional about their environment. They chose to be in a place where learning is expected, growth is required, and excellence is pursued. The Bible reminds us: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33, KJV). This principle works both ways. Negative environments pull you down. Positive, value-driven environments lift you up. Your environment will either echo your excuses or amplify your purpose.

Growth Requires Humility
One of the most impactful aspects of the conference was the humility of great leaders. No matter their level of success, they remained teachable. They listened. They asked questions. They leaned in. The scripture reminds us that “pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2, KJV)
True leadership growth begins when you accept that you still have more to learn. Being around the right people exposes blind spots and opens doors to new perspectives. I'm learning that the moment you think you have arrived is the moment you stop advancing.
Encouragement Fuels Endurance
Leadership can be demanding. It requires perseverance, clarity, and faith. Being around people who understand that the season you are going through gives you the strength to keep going. During this conference, I experienced encouragement that renewed my focus. Not surface-level encouragement, but the kind that speaks to your purpose and calls you higher. “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, KJV). Encouragement builds endurance. It reminds you why you started and strengthens your resolve to continue. Encouragement is not just support. It is fuel for the assignment God has placed in your hands.

Intentional Connection is a Leadership Discipline
Getting around the right people does not happen by accident. It requires intentional decisions. You must seek out environments where growth is cultivated and values are aligned. This week reinforced a key principle: If you want to grow beyond your current level, you must step into rooms where you are not the most experienced person. Jesus Himself modeled this through His relationships. He chose disciples, invested in them, and walked closely with them. “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him…” (Mark 3:14, KJV). Proximity matters. Being with the right people shapes how you think, how you lead, and how you live.
A Call to Action
Do not leave your growth to chance. Be intentional about who you listen to, who you learn from, and who you walk with.
Ask yourself:
Are the people around me challenging me to grow?
Do my relationships align with my values?
Am I placing myself in environments that strengthen my faith and leadership?
If the answer is no, then it is time to make a change. Because your next level is connected to the people you choose to walk with today.

Final Reflection
The Maxwell Leadership Conference was more than an event. It was a reminder. A reminder that leadership is refined in the right environment. A reminder that growth accelerates when you align with people who share your values. A reminder that God often uses relationships to shape your calling. As I move forward from this experience, I carry this truth with me:
God elevates leaders who are willing to position themselves in places of growth, accountability, and purpose. Stay intentional. Stay connected. Keep growing.
